Ashoka U and TechChange Twitter Chat: Tech Innovations, Social Entrepreneurs, and Higher Ed

Submitted by John C. Townsend

Do you have an idea for new models in higher education? Are you interested in what universities will look like 10, 20, and 50 years from now? Join TechChange and Ashoka U on Friday, July 22 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. EDT for a live twitter chat to discuss how technology and innovation are changing higher education today.

Topic: How will technological innovation and social entrepreneurship transform higher education?

Background: On university campuses these days, social entrepreneurship isn’t just a topic for the business school. Businesses that create a social return are a growing trend across all disciplines on campuses today. There’s a strong example at the University of Texas at Austin, where the successful “Social Innovation Competition” gathered an avalanche of 1,450 submissions last year. The competition, open to students from all majors and from all over the world, has named winners in a variety of fields, including public health, education, engineering, and information technology. The recent announcement from Dell to grant $5 million to the university to grow the competition shows how much promise the movement holds. And others are throwing in support as well; tech companies like Open Action map out campuses across the nation to help students and faculty hone in on who is involved in social innovation and increase collaboration.

As the social entrepreneurship movement spreads, it’s an exciting time to discuss tech innovation in higher education with TechChange, an organization devoted to training today’s leaders to leverage emerging technologies for social change.

Questions we are particularly interested in:

How is technology currently being used to foster social innovation, improve collaboration, and increase retention within universities? How have Ashoka Fellows used technology to create social change in higher education?

What are the most significant barriers preventing new technologies and innovations from being implemented in higher education? How do we engage more students from technical disciplines (such as computer science and engineering) to get involved with social entrepreneurship?
