Ashoka U Changemaker Campus Network Grows to 40 Institutions as 3 More Campuses are Designated

Ashoka U announced today that three additional institutions of higher education have joined their global network of Changemaker Campuses. The new campuses are Pacific School of Religion (PSR), an ecumenical seminary in Berkeley, CA; University of California San Diego (UC San Diego), a public research university in San Diego, CA; and University of St. Thomas (St. Thomas), a private, Catholic, liberal arts university in St. Paul, MN.

Guided by Ashoka’s vision for a world where “Everyone is a Changemaker,” Ashoka U takes an institutional change approach to impact the education of millions of students. We collaborate with colleges and universities to break down barriers to institutional change and foster a campus-wide culture of social innovation. The Changemaker Campus program, launched in 2008, selects diverse institutions who represent higher education globally; model campus-wide excellence in social innovation and changemaking; and are committed to transforming the field of higher education through collaboration and thought leadership.

As Marina Kim, Ashoka U’s Executive Director puts it, “We need campuses that are driven by a commitment to educate students with empathy, entreprenurship and collaboration skills.  We also challenge them to deliver a high-quality education while also contributing to social impact. These pioneering campuses are role models for the field of higher education.”

To be selected as a Changemaker Campus, higher education institutions navigate a rigorous selection process including an ecosystem assessment scan, site visit, and in-person panel. PSR, UC San Diego, and St. Thomas are joining 37 other colleges and universities across seven countries that are leading social innovation and changemaking in higher education.

Pacific School of Religion

As the first seminary in the Changemaker Campus Network, Pacific School of Religion is at the forefront of redefining the seminary experience in the 21st century through its empathy-based education, responsiveness to current issues, and shaping the intersection of spirituality and social innovation. PSR has developed innovative curricular offerings with a strong focus on experiential learning which only complement their highly inclusive culture and community that is committed to social change.

University of California San Diego

Established in 1960, UC San Diego has been shaped by scholars who aren’t afraid to take risks and redefine conventional wisdom. It constantly seeks to push boundaries and challenge expectations. Today, as one of the top 15 research universities in the world, they are driving innovation and change to advance society, propel economic growth and make the world a better place.

University of St. Thomas

University of St. Thomas, the second Changemaker Campus in the Midwest, has much to contribute around interdisciplinary and interfaith collaboration and integrating professional, graduate, and science/engineering education with social innovation. In addition, the culture around changemaking reaches every corner of campus and aligns with the university’s mission to educate “students to be morally responsible leaders who think critically, act wisely, and work skillfully to advance the common good.”
