Behind the Scenes at Ignite @ ASU

Change isn’t something that happens overnight, but events like Ignite @ ASU provide a venue for passionate leaders to share ideas and connect. Using the Ignite format, in five minutes each presenter shares his/her ideas using 20 PowerPoint slides that advance automatically every 15 seconds.

On September 30, 2010, 13 changemakers from diverse backgrounds demonstrated to over 250 people that everyone has the capacity to create change. Some of the highlights of the evening included a first generation college student combating high school dropout rates and an ASU student demonstrating that everyone has the ability to create change. Shortly after Ignite @ ASU ended, Kelli Donley, who shared her idea about planting citrus trees to harvest food for the hungry, was approached by a community member who pledged to plant 50 trees for her parents’ 50th wedding anniversary.

How do you create a successful Ignite event?

  • Visit the official Ignite website: see how to receive an Ignite in a box and learn tips to make your event a success.
  • Partner with your local Ignite: Boulder, Colorado and New Orleans already have Ignite events and would make great partners. Ignite Phoenix helped us with our speaker training sessions, marketing and logistics preparation.
  • Find a sponsor: Thanks to our sponsor, Arizona State Credit Union, we were able to provide prizes and free food from local restaurants.

What does Ignite have to do with social entrepreneurship? Social Entrepreneurship is about creating sustainable change that advances the social good. Change begins with an idea and the Ignite format gives passionate people a platform to share ideas with the hope that they will make connections, begin new partnerships, inspire others and therefore create change.

With a new semester about to begin, organizing an Ignite event is a great way to get people excited about your efforts around social entrepreneurship education. We hope you will consider using this fun, fast-paced format to showcase changemakers to transform your local communities!
