Universidad de Monterrey Joins Cohort of Ashoka U Changemaker Campuses

Arlington, VA – Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM) of Mexico has been selected by Ashoka U to join a global consortium of leaders in social entrepreneurship education. This cohort of Changemaker Campuses consists of 24 diverse institutions committed to advancing social innovation initiatives on their campuses and catalyzing change in higher education. These dynamic institutions encourage student innovation for social and environmental good through robust course curricula related to social entrepreneurship, numerous incubators and fellowship opportunities, and extensive support from administrators and faculty members across disciplines. UDEM joins this network now after completing a rigorous selection process involving months of assessments, interviews, site visits, and strategy sessions.

UDEM was designated as a Changemaker Campus because of its unique contribution to the field of social entrepreneurship education. UDEM, a private university of Catholic inspiration open to students and faculty of all creeds and backgrounds in Monterrey, Mexico, has a strong civic engagement mission that stresses high involvement with the community. UDEM demonstrates its commitment to educating the whole student by upholding three main pillars: an academic culture of excellence, a service-oriented holistic education, and a sustainable educational infrastructure. One of UDEM’s social projects, Preparatoria Politécnica Santa Catarina, a low-cost, high-performance charter high school in which 80% of the teachers are UDEM undergraduates, is an example of the university’s deep commitment to social impact. Such programs embody UDEM’s determination to develop students to be leaders and to follow their passions by serving their communities.

Ashoka U is well on its way to achieving its goal of growing the Changemaker Campus network to at least 30 diverse institutions by 2015. By continuing to support diverse institutions committed to changemaking, Ashoka U strives to demonstrate that a more entrepreneurial, innovative, and world-changing higher education sector is possible.
