Faculty Institute

“The faculty institute was one of the greatest learning experiences I have had in my 20+ years of teaching. Sessions helped me to see how I can incorporate teachings in social innovation and entrepreneurship into my classes.”

Case Study: Marquette University
Marquette University brought together 40 faculty – a combination of department chairs and the most popular professors (voted to attend Faculty Institute by students). They saw the following after the retreat:
• One professor from each school committed to a new class session on changemaking
• Three new courses on social innovation and changemaking launched within 1 year
• 50% of all professors who didn’t know about social innovation before, now embrace the idea.
Are faculty at your institution interested in social entrepreneurship but not sure how to integrate it into their teaching and research?
Bring a diverse group of influential faculty together for training and partnership.
What It Is
Faculty join together with Ashoka U and our “Faculty in Residence” for a two day training.
Needs Addressed
Institutional change cannot happen with just one or two committed faculty members. By bringing together faculty from across many disciplines, you can activate all parts of the university and create a coalition committed to incorporating social entrepreneurship, social innovation, and/or changemaking into their teaching and research.
The faculty institute could also be an opportunity for regional field building by bringing together faculty across several institutions in your region. In this Institute, faculty receive training on social entrepreneurship, how it relates to their teaching and research, how to incorporate it into their current courses, and explore new course pathways and other ways to enhance the academic offerings and integration on campus.
Goals and Evaluation
Key Goals for the Faculty Institute, to be customized based on your ideal targets:
1. Faculty Awareness and Engagement: # faculty engaged.
2. “Faculty Champions” Conversion: 70-90% participating faculty feel empowered to talk about social innovation and understand how it relates to their work.
3. Community of Commitment: 70-90% participating faculty have lived a common experience and engaged in substantive discussion around educating students for changemaking.
4. New Course/Module Development: 50% of participating faculty commit to developing a new courses or class sessions
5. Larger Strategic Planning Initiated: Consider institutional goals: Certificate, Minor or Major in Social Innovation?
