“If I can motivate another thousand students, a thousand people to go and address these problems, they’re smart enough to go do it, they’ve got the time to go do it, and they’ll solve these problems, and then we can get the leverage and make the world a better place.”

Berkeley Microfinance Online Course – 2012 Awardee

The Microfinance Simulcast is an innovative online course which has expanded to more than 75 universities over the past four years that teaches graduate students how to use microfinance to profitably get people out of poverty.

Results:  1500-2500 students a year at 50-100 university campuses.  Those students go on to amazing things, e.g.,  the creators of the Living on One documentary (www.livingonone.org), investors at impact funds, and operators at microfinance institutions

Get involved:  Bring the simulcast to your campus!  All you need to do is contact Sean at [email protected].  The total commitment is to

  1. find a room on your campus with network connectivity and a projector
  2. market to get students into the room for the simulcast.  Whether the class is sanctified by your campus or run as a club type activity is indifferent to us.
  3. Attend a virtual tech test to make sure you have good connectivity
  4. start attending classes. We’ve traditionally held classes on Mondays from 4-6pm Pacific time

Also, we want to expand.  If you have a favorite professor teaching how to improve the world, maybe they want to access a virtual network of campuses and learn how to teach such a course.  Send them our way.
